Repair vs. New HVAC System

Your HVAC system has been acting up lately. It’s not heating or cooling your house as well as it used to. It seems to struggle to get the temperature even close to a comfortable level. You’ve had a technician diagnose the problem (or problems) – looks like the heat exchanger needs repair…the evaporator coil needs replacing…the coolant system is leaking.

Do you repair the HVAC system or buy a new HVAC unit?

It’s often a tough decision. No one wants to go through the time, hassle and cost of buying a new HVAC system. But sometimes the cost and benefits of installing a new system outweigh the cost of HVAC repairs. Other times you might be able to get a little more life out of your current system through those HVAC repairs.

In order to come to a decision that’s right for you, there are some things you should consider:

  • The cost of the HVAC repairs vs. the cost of a new system.

S&E Cataldi contractors inspect your system, and provide a complimentary estimate on how much it will cost to have it repaired. They can also provide recommendations on how much a new HVAC system will cost to buy and have installed. You’ll have a good idea up-front of how much both of these options will cost you so you can understand how repairing a current system vs. installing a new one will fit in your budget.
  • The age of your current HVAC system.

How old is your HVAC system? Most HVAC systems last, on average, 15 to 18 years. In rare cases well-maintained systems can sometimes last up to 20 years or even longer. But think about this – if your system is getting up there in age, you could be looking at spending a significant amount of money for the initial repair and then additional money in the months and years to come for even more repairs. You need to ask yourself if it’s worth it. If not – then a new HVAC system may be the way to go.

On the other hand – if your system is, for example, 10 years old, simple repairs may be the better option. Done right, repairs can help extend the life of your system, thereby maximizing the value of your investment.
  • A new HVAC system may add to the resale value of your home.

If you’re considering a home sale within the next few years, installing a new system could be the way to go. New HVAC systems can be used as a selling point to prospective buyers.

Heating and Cooling Duct Replacement

If you're considering replacing your old heating or cooling system you should also consider replacing your ductwork. Your existing ductwork may not meet the requirements your new system demands or Energy Star Requires.

Old ductwork may cause:

  • Poor insulation that will leak cool air or warm air outside of your home.
  • Intake dirt and particles from outside and damage your filter and system.
  • Outragious heating or cooling bills.
  • Strain on your HVAC system that will cause you to replace your unit earlier than expected.
